Please introduce yourself by telling us where you live (country, city/state/region) and what kind of writing you do.

Amy: Amy, from New Zealand! Academic writing in art history. I'm currently living in Edinburgh

Vicky: hello! Vicky from Essex, UK - historian, working on the history of the Victorian lodger

Eva: Hi, I am Eva, based in Germany. I do mostly academic writing.

Kate: Kia ora, I am Kate, in Tamaki Makaurau/ Auckland, NZ. I am writing a PHD in critical disability studies. And I teach at AUT. If I disappear it is because my son has woken up 😜

Ramon Menendez: Hello, I'm Ramón Menéndez, joining from Melbourne, Australia (Wurundjeri land). Doing sociological writing.

Bring our voices into the room: What is something new you have tried recently?

Christmas markets, painting classes, attending this VWS, marking essays…

Warm up: Recall a memory about the festive season! Or free-write about the holidays generally. Or write a poem about a Christmas tree! Lots of options…

Amy: I wrote about family Christmas trips!

Vicky: I'm obsessed with light blue baubles -- my latest one is a light blue robot :)

Kate: I did some free-writing/ a reflection on this upcoming Christmas which will be a bit different for my son and I as my husband is heading back home to Colombia to see his family…

Pre-pomodoro: What do you plan to work on?

Eva: Developing a book proposal a bit further

Ramon: I'm working on a rejected article, and some feedback from my mentor for resubmission.

Vicky: writing on the sleeping arrangements of lodgers -- transferring stuff I have written by hand to a word doc, editing as I go

Kate: I am going to work on a specific section of a chapter of my thesis to bring some historical literature into it...

Post-pomodoro: What did you achieve?

Vicky: I got some cases studies edited/typed up

Kate: I wrote a paragraph in the section I mentioned, and bought in two long quotes from notes/ reading.

Eva: Tried to formulate three key benefits of the book

Ramon: I have summarised my mentor's points on the paper, which were handwritten from our meeting this morning.

We also had a discussion about the Artist*Academic https://www.artist-academic.com/

Another great resource is the following book: https://www.creativeuniversities.com/

WINDOW session:  One thing that you discussed, noticed, or learned.

Kate: I got some confidence with the ‘voice’ I have settled on for writing my thesis

Eva: The power of proverbs but also of visual and active language.

Amy: Don't assume any background knowledge!

Ramon: Public spaces

Vicky: we had a good sociological discussion -- so I need to consider in that more in my work. thanks Ramon! I'm going to plan a trip to the British Library to get some more sociological reading done :)
