Frame

Nina (Australia)

[Reflection]

I was taken by many of the prompts in this module, but I will share here some initial thoughts on FRAME. The metaphor framing this prompt helped me to think differently with, was a piece of my PhD data analysis as a medical consult between a white Australian doctor and a non-white patient. This framing helped remind me of cultural, language and knowledge differences… And the need to ask/answer questions clearly, consider the communication style, tone, and words I am using, and to check understanding. Also to fully explain what might be taken for granted. That writing is never a one-sided or you need directional process and the metaphor of the doctor's consult speaks to what shared, what is hidden, what is assumed – as well as the power hierarchies, affect, ‘traditional/content’ expectations and dynamics that are embedded and reproduced in academic writing/medical practice if not engaged with more thoughtfully. It also encourages me to be more active and purposeful in my writing, to ask more direct/expansive questions and to come to the task better prepared than just turning up and letting someone else direct me (like supervisors) or the conversation/outcome (thesis production). Thinking of this data section as a medical appointment was something I had not considered previously!
