Add Action

[Writing experiment]

In addition to a lot of walks, this week I worked on adding action-- and evocative verbs -- into my prose. Here's a small sample:

Less than a month into their marriage the Brewers embarked on the opportunity of a lifetime: an overseas tour. The promise of other shores lured them abroad, despite the hardships of nineteenth century travel. The unknown excursion outweighed the familiar travails of the domestic vaudeville circuit. Adventure allured bedraggled performers, especially when Jim Crow segregation, low wages, unscrupulous theater managers, and deplorable stage conditions (that is, when they were lucky enough to have a stage, not dirt, beneath their feet) marred the comfort of home.
